At a very early age I was encouraged to draw. My influences being Star Wars, Star Trek, and fantasy movies like The Never Ending Story and Legend. I often say Ralph McQuarrie is the designer of my imagination. I wanted to be an artist when I grew up but was told that artists only make money after they’re dead. I wondered at the time why everyone encouraged me to draw but not to pursue a career in art. As an adult I think it may have been an effective way to keep a rambunctious child occupied. Also living in a rural area my parents knowledge of art was confined to mostly renaissance fine art. With an art career out of the picture I turned my interests to science. I absolutely loved cosmology and physics. I was intrigued by other worlds and far away galaxies. I remember learning in school how Jupiter had dozens of satellites with the largest being the four Galilean moons. I was so excited to actually see the data and pictures from the Voyager probes. I came home one day to tell my parents the awesome news. Instead of encouragement I was met with anger. They were very skeptical of science due to lack of education and religious beliefs. I was shown how there was only one sun and one moon and to say otherwise was practically sac religious. I was told the pictures I had seen were fake. I was devastated on many levels. I’m a grown man now. My parents have passed and I have long since forgiven their ignorance. Unfortunately their beliefs were so pervasive that the trajectory of my life has been far from my original dreams. Hopefully I have enough life left as well as an effective media to help me to share my imagination with the world.
